The only way to receive love is to forgive.
We can only love others if we are willing to offer them something they do not deserve: mercy. When we give others mercy, we in turn receive mercy for ourselves. Something happens at the psychological level. We're able to let off some of the ridiculous pressure we put on ourselves and others to be perfect all the time. We realize that this can never happen in our human condition, and we free ourselves by saying, "There is still good here. We can still be okay." We may not really be in balance on the moral scales of the universe, but somehow there is safety in knowing that reality is not going to fall apart.
